Discuss the differences between the SCS trial and permanent implantation, ensuring patients understand each phase. Address common patient concerns (e.g., pain during/after procedure, scarring, body image, managing external leads, wound care, and potential complications). Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Coordination Serve as a liaison between patients and the MDT (anesthesiologists, pain physicians, psychologists, physical/occupational therapists, surgeons, etc.). Facilitate communication and shared decision-making, ensuring patient preferences and psychosocial factors are considered but not solely dictating treatment choices. Coordinate pre-trial psychological and functional assessments as recommended. Patient Selection & Screening Assist in gathering and documenting relevant clinical, psychological, and social information to support appropriate patient selection for SCS. Ensure all required pre-trial evaluations (including psychological screening and assessment of pain indication) are completed and documented. Trial Preparation & Support Educate patients on trial equipment management, wound care, and activity restrictions during the trial period. Provide practical support and troubleshooting for trial-related paraphernalia (externalized leads, dressings, etc.). Monitor for and promptly report any adverse events or complications during the trial. Assessment & Documentation Collect and document patient-reported outcomes during and after the SCS trial, including pain relief (preferably as percentage improvement), functional changes, analgesic use, and overall satisfaction. Use validated, multidimensional assessment tools for pain and function. Systematically query and document all pain medication use (including for nonindex pain) and reasons for use. Expectation Management Set and reinforce realistic expectations for SCS outcomes, emphasizing that SCS is not a cure and may not result in a pain-free state. Address psychological factors, mood, and coping strategies as part of expectation management. Ongoing Support & Follow-up Provide ongoing support throughout the SCS journey, including post-trial and post-implantation phases. Facilitate transition to rehabilitation or other services as needed. Ensure continuity of care and serve as a consistent point of contact for patient questions and concerns.
