[Remote] Opto-Mechanical Designer - REMOTE

The Opto-Mechanical Designer will be responsible for designing and modeling mechanical components that interface with optical elements, as well as developing detailed drawings and supporting optical subsystem integration.
Responsibilities
- Performs all conventional aspects of the functional area subject matter
- Devises new approaches to problems encountered
- Plans, schedules, and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria
- Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements
- Provides technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers
- Responsible for the design and modeling of mechanical components to interface with optical elements such as lenses, mirrors, diffractive elements and filters
- Design and model the mechanical means to mount and position these elements in an optical system
- Develop detailed drawings of these optical elements and overall optical system as well as fabrication and assembly drawings for the mechanical hardware and optical assemblies
- Develop assembly and test procedures and support all levels of optical subsystem integration and tests and report as necessary
- Support trade studies and recommend system architecture and design approach
- Capable of leading the development of design concepts for optic handling equipment and support development of test support equipment
- Conduct analysis and evaluation of a design concept to produce realistic assessment of development and manufacturing risks
- Develop strategies for mitigating risks
- Work with other engineers, technicians, manufacturing and quality engineers in a team environment
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations and support project level reviews
Skills
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent 7+ years of related experience
- Specific knowledge related to the mechanical design mounts and modeling of opto-mechanical systems
- Proficient in CAD software (Solid Works, NX), providing innovative and practical mechanical solutions in support of optical system development
- Ability to work all phases of opto-mechanical subsystems from the conceptual design layout, package prototyping, fixture/tooling design, development of mechanical attachment methods/tools for optimal optical alignment including system level assembly and interface drawings (ICD)
- Develop assembly and test procedures and support all levels of optical subsystem integration and tests and report as necessary
- Support trade studies and recommend system architecture and design approach
- Must be capable of leading the development of design concepts for optic handling equipment and support development of test support equipment
- Conduct analysis and evaluation of a design concept to produce realistic assessment of development and manufacturing risks
- Develop strategies for mitigating risks
- Work with other engineers, technicians, manufacturing and quality engineers in a team environment
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations and support project level reviews
- Prior experience with NASA or other work related to space flight hardware
- BS in a technical field
- Proficient in NX or SolidWorks computer aided software tool
- Active TS/SCI clearance is preferred
