[Remote] Principal Firmware Engineer

Green Key Resources is seeking an exceptional Principal Firmware Engineer to drive the design and development of advanced embedded systems for robotics and autonomous platforms. This role requires a deeply experienced engineer who will influence architecture across teams and deliver high-performance firmware in mission-critical environments.
Responsibilities
- Architect and implement complex embedded firmware systems for robotics and autonomous platforms, from concept through production
- Lead electrical and firmware co-design, including schematic development for microcontroller-based control systems, power conversion, and motor drives
- Develop and optimize real-time, safety-critical embedded software with stringent latency, reliability, and performance requirements
- Drive system-level integration across sensors, actuators, and control hardware, ensuring robust and scalable operation
- Establish and execute rigorous testing and validation strategies aligned with military-grade or similarly demanding standards
- Diagnose and resolve deeply complex hardware/software issues across the full system stack
- Act as the highest-level technical authority for firmware and embedded systems, influencing cross-functional architecture and engineering direction
- Mentor senior engineers and elevate engineering standards, best practices, and technical rigor across the organization
Skills
- 10+ years of experience in electrical design and embedded firmware development, including schematic design and system-level architecture
- Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- Deep expertise in microcontroller-based systems, including power electronics, motor control, and high-reliability design
- Extensive hands-on experience with advanced testing methodologies, lab instrumentation, and validation processes for mission-critical systems
- 10+ years developing real-time, safety-critical embedded systems in production environments
- Expert-level proficiency in C++ for embedded systems and strong Python skills for tooling, automation, and development workflows
- Proven experience deploying and scaling real-time control software in robotics or autonomous systems
- Demonstrated success integrating complex firmware with sensors, actuators, and control hardware in tightly coupled systems
- Deep experience with embedded Linux, RTOS, and building or customizing kernels for specialized embedded platforms
- Strong command of networking and communication protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, CAN, UART, and I2C in distributed systems
- Track record of optimizing embedded software for ultra-low latency and high performance under strict power and compute constraints
- Experience leading firmware development for large-scale or highly complex robotic or autonomous systems
- Familiarity with safety certification standards and regulatory requirements for mission-critical or defense-grade systems
