Position Title: Upward Bound Math & Science Advisor Job Category: Academic Staff Employment Type: Regular Job Profile: Pre-College Svcs Advising Spec Job Duties: The TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Advisor supports the planning, implementation, and delivery of comprehensive pre-college services designed to prepare eligible high school students with demonstrated interest and potential in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for successful entry into and completion of postsecondary education in STEM fields. The Advisor works collaboratively with the UBMS Program Director and program staff to ensure compliance with U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant objectives while fostering strong partnerships with target schools, families, STEM faculty, and community stakeholders. This position provides direct student advising, academic support, STEM exploration, outreach, and program coordination. Major Duties and Responsibilities Outreach, Recruitment & Community Engagement Design, coordinate, and facilitate outreach and recruitment activities targeting eligible students with interest and aptitude in STEM fields and their families. Assist with the development of promotional materials, applications, and recruitment strategies in digital and print formats that share the scope and purpose of UBMS. Conduct informational sessions, workshops, and recruitment events at target schools and community sites, particularly in collaboration with math and science staff/faculty. Represent the UBMS program at school, STEM-related, and community events to promote awareness and participation. Identify prospective participants with STEM potential and make admission recommendations to the Program Director. Academic Advising, Counseling & Case Management Manage a caseload of 60 UBMS participants. Develop and implement individualized education plans aligned with a rigorous course progression. Provide one-on-one and small group academic advising, mentoring, and counseling with emphasis on STEM persistence and academic readiness. Monitor academic progress through high school with particular attention to academic rigor, transcripts, assessments, dual enrollment, and tutoring participation. Support students with college admissions, scholarship opportunities, research programs, and financial aid processes. Provide referrals to tutoring, research opportunities, internships, and STEM enrichment resources as appropriate. Track participant persistence in STEM pathways and postsecondary outcomes for federal reporting purposes. Program Implementation, Curriculum & Student Services Research, develop, and facilitate workshops focused on career exploration, STEM exploration, college readiness, and study skills. Coordinate and support tutoring services, advanced math and science enrichment, ACT preparation, laboratory exposure, and academic skill-building activities. Assist with the planning, coordination, and facilitation of the summer program, including STEM coursework and experiential learning components. Organize and chaperone college visits, STEM lab tours, research site visits, academic enrichment trips, and program excursions. Collaborate with target school personnel, campus STEM faculty, research departments, and community organizations to deliver high-impact STEM programming. Program Administration, Data & Compliance Support Assist the Program Director with completion of the Annual Performance Report (APR) and other required reports. Maintain accurate participant records and data in the Blumen database and other required systems. Collect, track, and compile data for program evaluation and reporting, including participation, STEM course enrollment, and postsecondary admittance outcomes. Monitor participant stipends and maintain accurate documentation. Assist with monitoring program activities to ensure alignment with federal TRIO regulations and the Center for Pre-College Programs. Support budget tracking and resource coordination as assigned. Operational Support & Institutional Engagement Assist with supervision of student workers, tutors, and office support staff as assigned. Support daily office operations, including front-line communication with students, families, and visitors. Participate in the Center for Pre-College Programs departmental, SEMSS divisional, and TRIO UBMS program meetings. Maintain program materials, supplies, STEM resources, and communication boards. Collaborate with the Center for Pre-College Programs and other university departments, particularly STEM colleges and research units. Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of Upward Bound Math & Science, the Center for Pre-College Programs, and the Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success. Key Job Responsibilities: May assist with monitoring of pre-college program budget spending Serves as a main point of contact to students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements Provides support in identifying appropriate fields of study, career options, or programs and refers students to appropriate resources Leads the implementation of program policies and procedures through oversight of day-to-day activities for program staff and student and community volunteers Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the pre-college program Researches, develops, and facilitates pre-college program content and materials Develops and evaluates curriculum and programs and provides recommendations for improvement Delivers pre-college program content and materials to community members Schedules, secures, and communicates logistics and resources in support of a pre-college program Department: Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success The Division of Strategic Enrollment Management & Student Success (SEMSS) is responsible for advancing UWM’s student enrollment, persistence, and completion goals across the full student lifecycle—from recruitment and admission through financial aid, advising, retention, career readiness, and degree completion. Guided by a shared set of divisional core values, SEMSS serves as both an operational hub and strategic partner to academic units and central administration in shaping institutional enrollment and student success outcomes. SEMSS encompasses 11 departments, 160 full-time employees, and 350 student employees. Compensation: 45,000 - 50,000 Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, STEM, healthcare, or related fields.
  • Experience working with low-income, first-generation, underrepresented, and/or educationally disadvantaged student populations.
  • Experience providing academic advising, counseling, mentoring, or student support services.
  • Experience designing and facilitating educational workshops and programming. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of or experience working with U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs.
  • Experience with program evaluation, data collection, and reporting systems.
  • Experience conducting outreach and recruitment in school and/or community-based settings.
  • Experience coordinating pre-college activities, college readiness workshops, STEM programming, and college major and career exploration.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working in a high school and/or higher education setting.
