[Remote] Service Technician / Engineer
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Koehler Instrument Company is seeking a Regional Service Technician / Engineer to support customers in the field while helping grow service, parts, upgrade, and equipment opportunities within an assigned region. This role combines hands-on technical service, customer support, and sales awareness, focusing on troubleshooting laboratory instruments and providing customer interaction.
Responsibilities
- Travel to customer sites for instrument service, installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, repair, and training
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, temperature control, software, communication, and instrument performance issues
- Support Koehler laboratory testing instruments used in petroleum, fuels, lubricants, grease, refining, petrochemical, inspection, research, and materials testing laboratories
- Run calibration checks and standards according to ASTM methods, customized methods, and Koehler performance specifications
- Install, operate, test, and verify laboratory instruments during service visits and commissioning
- Perform pre-commissioning work, including system checkout, instrumentation calibration, communication testing, and functional verification
- Provide telephone, email, and on-site technical support to customers and distributors as needed
- Train customers on proper instrument operation, maintenance, calibration, and basic troubleshooting
- Build and maintain strong customer relationships through professional service, clear communication, and reliable follow-up
- Identify customer needs for spare parts, consumables, service contracts, upgrades, replacement instruments, and new equipment
- Work with the sales team to support upsell and cross-sell opportunities for Koehler products and services
- Provide basic product recommendations when customers have technical, application, or method-related questions
- Document service visits, customer discussions, technical findings, opportunities, and follow-up items in CRM
- Communicate recurring product issues, premature part failures, and field feedback to quality, engineering, service, and product management
- Support regional sales activity by visiting existing accounts, checking instrument status, and identifying future service or equipment needs
- Attend customer visits, trade shows, demonstrations, training events, and internal product training as needed
- Manage assigned service inventory, parts usage, and required documentation before and after service calls
- Maintain knowledge of Koehler products, ASTM methods, petroleum testing applications, and competitor equipment in the assigned region
- Assist with special projects, new product support, customer confidence rebuilding, and strategic growth initiatives
Skills
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read manuals, wiring diagrams, technical documents, service instructions, and ASTM method requirements
- Comfortable speaking with customers and explaining technical issues in a clear, professional way
- Sales awareness and willingness to identify customer needs, service opportunities, parts needs, and equipment opportunities
- Organized and able to document service work, customer visits, follow-up actions, and opportunities accurately
- Ability to work independently while staying connected with service, sales, engineering, product management, and internal teams
- Willingness to travel regularly throughout the assigned region
- Experience with any of the following applications is strongly preferred: Flash point testing, Distillation, Cold flow testing, Viscosity, Grease testing, Lubricity and tribology, Thermal oxidation, Evaporative loss, Petroleum and lubricant testing, ASTM testing methods, Laboratory instrumentation, Temperature control systems, Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, Software and instrument communication troubleshooting
- Experience in field service, technical service, laboratory instruments, industrial equipment, electrical repair, mechanical repair, controls, or scientific instrumentation preferred
- Experience with petroleum labs, refineries, inspection labs, lubricant labs, research labs, or analytical instruments is a strong plus
- Technical school, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or equivalent hands-on experience will be considered
- Experience with ASTM testing equipment and petroleum testing instrumentation is strongly preferred
