[Remote] Mechanical Engineer, Advanced Engineering (DC Chiller)
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Ursus, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Engineer in the Advanced Engineering group to architect the future of data center infrastructure. The role involves owning the thermodynamic design of a direct current air cooled chiller platform for next-generation AI data centers, addressing mechanical and thermal challenges for high-power HVDC/LVDC power distribution systems.
Responsibilities
- Own the thermodynamic design of the direct current air cooled chiller platform for next-generation AI data centers, focusing on refrigeration cycle optimization and performance testing
- Address EMI/EMC shielding, creepage/clearance requirements, and mechanical integration of power modules, capacitors, and semiconductor devices in compact, high-reliability packages
- Define and execute mechanical and thermal validation testing including structural FEA, thermal cycling, vibration, and environmental qualification for power electronics assemblies
- Lead end-to-end mechanical design of HVDC/LVDC power distribution systems and integrate cooling solutions for high-power electronics in data centers
- Bring refrigeration equipment from concept through prototype to production
Skills
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 7+ years of mechanical design experience in power systems, high-power electronics, or energy infrastructure with strong thermal management background
- Deep expertise in structural design, heat transfer, CFD analysis, electronics packaging, and outdoor-rated electrical equipment enclosures
- Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and thermal simulation tools (Ansys Fluent or similar)
- Familiarity with high-voltage DC systems and NEC, UL, or IEC standards
- 5+ years of experience in refrigeration system design, chiller development, or HVAC equipment engineering
- Deep understanding of vapor compression refrigeration cycles including centrifugal compressor performance characteristics
- Experience with thermal modeling tools (EES, CoolPack, or similar) and refrigerant property databases
- Hands-on experience bringing refrigeration equipment from concept through prototype to production
- Familiarity with low GWP refrigerants and evolving refrigerant regulations
- Experience with ASHRAE standards (15, 34, 90.1) and UL certification processes
- Strong analytical skills and comfort with ambiguity in early-stage product development
Benefits
- Medical, Dental, Vision, Commuter and 401K benefits with company matching for full-time roles
