[Remote] Financial Controller
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Fulbright Construction Inc is a family-owned decorative concrete contracting company headquartered in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. They are seeking a seasoned Financial Controller to oversee all accounting operations and serve as the senior financial authority, ensuring compliance and delivering financial clarity to support strategic decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the full accounting cycle and ensure the accuracy and integrity of all financial records
- Prepare and deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements including profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow
- Present financial reports directly to ownership with clear analysis, variance explanations, and actionable insights
- Monitor financial performance against budget and proactively flag areas of concern
- Maintain a complete and audit-ready financial record system at all times
- Lead the annual budgeting process in direct collaboration with Brian Fulbright
- Develop rolling cash flow forecasts and assist with short and long-term financial planning
- Provide detailed cost analysis on projects and identify opportunities for margin improvement
- Support strategic business decisions with accurate financial modeling and scenario planning
- Manage all federal, state, and local tax obligations including Colorado sales tax, payroll tax, and annual business returns
- Coordinate with our external CPA and tax advisors to ensure all filings are accurate, complete, and submitted on time
- Ensure full compliance with GAAP and all applicable financial regulations
- Establish, document, and enforce internal financial controls and accounting procedures
- Oversee contractor and vendor 1099 preparation and filing
- Manage audit preparation and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and financial institutions
- Oversee payroll processing and ensure accuracy and full compliance
- Review and approve all accounts payable and accounts receivable activity
- Reconcile all bank, credit card, and loan accounts on a monthly basis
- Manage vendor and contractor payment schedules and cash flow coordination
- Directly supervise and mentor our Bookkeeper and Accountant
- Conduct regular reviews of the accounting team's work to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Maintain and continuously optimize our accounting systems, QuickBooks Online or Desktop
- Identify and implement process improvements across the full financial function
- Train and support team members on financial systems, procedures, and best practices
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, CPA license strongly preferred
- 5 or more years of progressive accounting or financial management experience
- Demonstrated experience in a controller, senior accountant, or equivalent leadership role
- Deep proficiency in QuickBooks Online or Desktop
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP, tax compliance, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Proven experience with job costing and project-based accounting, ideally in construction or trade services
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior accounting staff
- Exceptional analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail
- Clear, professional communication, you will interact directly with ownership, external advisors, and financial institutions
- Proven ability to work independently, prioritize competing responsibilities, and meet all deadlines without exception
- Active CPA license or active pursuit of CPA designation
- Direct experience in the construction, contracting, or trades industry
- Experience with payroll platforms including Gusto, ADP, or similar
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel for financial modeling
- Experience working in a small business or owner-operated environment
